Job Summary:

Under the supervision and direction of a licensed nurse, the medication assistant administers and records select oral, nasal, transdermal, rectal, inhalant and opthalmic scheduled medications to residents of LindenGrove. Trained to measure and record blood pressure, radial pulse and blood glucose readings by way of a fingerstick. Is also trained to perform clean wound treatments.

 

Job Standards:

  1. Has successfully completed the State of Wisconsin Approved Medication Assistant Training Program or has successfully completed an approved college level pharmacology course and training in the area of medication administration.
  2. Is a Certified Nursing Assistant on the Registry in Wisconsin in good standing.
  3. Has obtained positive written recommendation from the Unit Manager or Supervisor.
  4. If candidate is a nursing student, must also have written documentation from the nursing instructor on College letterhead that requirements relating to pharmacology and medication administration have been taught and demonstrated in a lab setting.
  5. Nursing Students must also provide a copy of college transcripts indicating candidate is currently enrolled in a nursing program and has successfully completed a pharmacology course following each semester.
  6. Must be employed with LindenGrove a minimum of 6 months.
  7. Must maintain an absentee percent of 3% or less at all times.
  8. Must adhere to all safety, security, infection control (including Universal Precautions) and hazardous materials policies and procedures, and perform all tasks to assure resident and personal safety and the protection of LindenGrove Property

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Job Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Administers scheduled medications prescribed for routine administration according to established LindenGrove Medication Administration Policies and Procedures.
  2. Knows and upholds pharmacologic principles, procedures and safety precautions with all medications.
  3. Administers oral, opthalmic, ear, rectal, nasal, transdermal, meter dosed inhalants, and wound treatments.
  4. Is not able to administer injectable medications, parenteral medications, Gastric or NG medications or feedings, machine driven nebulizers.
  5. May administer PRN medications only upon direction of licensed nurse.
  6. May perform blood glucose monitoring (ie accuchecks) after successful return skill demonstration.
  7. Complies with the Resident Bill of Rights.
  8. Reports to nurse when coming on duty and going off duty. Obtains assignment and specific directions from Unit Nurse or RN Supervisor.
  9. Reports to unit nurse any physical and emotional change in resident status, needs, unsafe conditions and maintenance problems immediately.
  10. Takes and records blood pressure and pulse as indicated in conjunction with prescribed medication therapy and / or those necessary to maintain ongoing observation of a resident.
  11. Participates and attends as required all inservices provided for employees as appropriate to the job classification.
  12. Works effectively and cooperatively as a team member with nursing staff.
  13. Floats to any nursing unit as the need arises.
  14. Follows all LindenGrove policies and procedures.
  15. Must be able to function as a Nursing Assistant (See nursing assistant job description)
  16. Knowledgeable of medication actions, medication effects on body systems and side effects especially in the geriatric population.
  17. Must be able to understand and effectively carry out verbal and / or written instruction.
  18. Must be able to adminsiter medications to elderly, confused and emotionally upset residents in a safe and mature manner and ability to accurately document this activity.
  19. Changes schedule or works overtime when necessary to meet the needs of the residents.
